and so here we are, it's come to this...
on 12th december 2019, this country plunged itself into the depths of the far-right, populist movement & elected b*ris johnson's conservative govt with an overwhelming majority. the progressive, radical left Labour movement under Jeremy Corbyn lost catastrophically. the billionaire-owned media didn't want a Labour govt that would make them pay their fair share towards wealth distribution & so they led an attack & vilification unlike anything we've seen up till this point. thing is, whilst the news media in the uk remains owned by the super rich, no political party that puts forward a manifesto as radical as Labour's was will get into power. so, we have to re-think our strategies. the power-hungry within Labour will try their best to move the party back to the centre to appease the media & they will hang, draw & quarter Corbyn & his allies if they have to. but this movement ain't about to go away. the hope of an end to austerity won't disappear. whatever way brexit is got done, the issues Corbyn's Labour tried to bring to the front of the debate will remain - the crisis in our NHS as the t*ries move to sell it to tr*mp, the crisis in public funding more generally - in our schools, transport, community centres. we have to remain strong enough to fight these battles & win them, because we cannot afford not to. like, for real. austerity has already killed thousands, there has been no justice for Grenfell, nurses are relying on food banks. imagine when this gets worse.
this isn't a despairing message to you, this zine is meant to give us hope & energy. we will have to use all the methods available to us to protect our society & communities. ppl marginalised already are at very great risk, as we have seen how b*ris' beliefs have led to spikes in hate crime before. people of colour, disabled people, the LGBTQI+ community, refugees, immigrants, womxn & nonbinary folk are at risk as the election will be seen as a mandate for bigots like the EDL & t*mmy robinson to encourage hate crime against those that their narrow & ignorant view of "br*tishness" cannot fathom including. we are committed to creating a safe space for anyone at risk under this govt - this zine is a message to you that we are here when you need us.
this zine has aimed to offer the artists included in it a way to express themselves & direct their anger. it is also available as a tool for the reader to navigate the support networks available across Merseyside. there are lists of charities & groups which offer support to the vulnerable, and information on small things you can do to help. Liverpool is a proud Labour stronghold with a strong sense of community & social justice. we have included a list of your MPs for your reference. now, more than ever, we will need to petition our MPs to try to get the voices of the working class & oppressed heard in parliament.
we aim to join together the collectives & communities of Liverpool & Merseyside into a unified movement of resistance against this govt. this is grassroots & activist politics - your role as an individual counts now more than ever. from your signing of petitions, writing to your MPs, joining collectives like ours, attending events hosted by radical, activist & community-focused networks, contributing to safe spaces & protesting, rallying, striking, we will get our voices heard.
we believe Liverpool can be at the centre of a movement for hope, solidarity & equality. now is not the time for moderation. it is the time to UNITE AND FIGHT. because, chances are, you will need the NHS at some point in your life. if you grow old, you will experience disability. if you or someone you love needs care, you need immigrants who can offer you that care. if you work, you will need unions now more than ever to protect your rights and to protect unions themselves. you will need your community to become your family - in this respect, we can learn from the LGBTQI+ community & from people of colour, as well as immigrants.
THE PEOPLE UNITED WILL NEVER BE DEFEATED.
YOU MAY TAKE AWAY OUR LEADER. YOU MAY EVEN TAKE AWAY THE PARTY THAT HAS LEAD US. BUT YOU CAN NEVER TAKE AWAY THE MOVEMENT. THE MOVEMENT HAS NO LEADERS, ONLY FOLLOWERS. AND THOSE WHO FOLLOW, FOLLOW TILL THE END, TILL THE LAST BATTLE CRY.
AND STILL LIKE AIR [WE] RISE
